Your Analytics Is Lying: Build a Tracking Plan First

When GA4, your ad platforms and your CRM all disagree, the problem is rarely the tool. It is the missing plan.
Your Analytics Is Lying: Build a Tracking Plan First

Every business I audit has the same complaint: the numbers don’t match. Ad platforms report one figure, analytics reports another, and the CRM a third. Teams lose trust in data and fall back on gut feeling. The fix starts on paper, not in a tag manager.

Why your dashboards disagree

Each platform counts differently. They use different attribution windows, different definitions of a conversion and different ways of handling consent and cross-device journeys. Some difference is normal. Large, unexplained gaps usually mean events are missing, duplicated or named inconsistently.

Write the plan in a spreadsheet

A tracking plan is a simple table that lists every event you care about. For each one, record:

  • The event name and when exactly it fires.
  • The parameters it carries (value, currency, product, form name).
  • Which tools receive it: analytics, ad platforms, CRM.
  • Who owns it, and the date it was last tested.

If it isn’t in the plan, it isn’t tracked. If it isn’t tested, it isn’t trusted.

Name events like a human

Use a consistent pattern such as object_action: form_submit, quote_request, checkout_start. Lowercase, no spaces, no dates in the name. Six months from now, anyone on the team should understand an event without asking.

Test before you trust

Use preview and debug modes to fire every event yourself. Complete a real purchase or form submission and follow it through every tool. Then compare a week of data across platforms and write down the expected gap so nobody panics later.

Next step: list your five most important conversions today. If you can’t say exactly when each one fires, that’s where to start.
