The 5-Step Content System That Ranks and Sells

Traffic you can’t monetise is a vanity metric. Here’s the system I use to pick, brief and publish content that brings in customers.
The 5-Step Content System That Ranks and Sells

Most content calendars are built backwards. Someone brainstorms topics, a writer produces posts, and months later the team wonders why traffic grew but leads did not. The fix is to start from revenue and work outward.

1. Start with money keywords

List the searches that people make right before they buy: comparisons, “best X for Y”, pricing questions and problem-aware queries tied to your product. Volume matters less than intent. A keyword with 90 monthly searches and buyers behind it beats 9,000 searches from students.

  • Pull ideas from sales calls, support tickets and on-site search.
  • Check Search Console for queries you already appear for on page two.
  • Tag each keyword by funnel stage before deciding anything else.

2. Map one page to one intent

Group keywords that a single page can satisfy, and give every group a single owner URL. This prevents two of your own pages competing for the same search, which quietly drags both down.

3. Write the brief before the post

A good brief answers: who is searching, what they need to leave with, what the top results miss, and what action we want next. It takes thirty minutes and saves days of rewriting.

If you can’t say what the reader should do after reading, the post isn’t ready to be written.

4. Publish, then refresh

Most posts don’t peak on day one. I review every article at 90 days: update facts, tighten the intro, add internal links from newer pages and improve the title if click-through is weak. Refreshing a page that already ranks is often the fastest SEO win available.

5. Connect content to conversion

Every post needs a next step that matches its intent. Early-stage readers get a checklist or newsletter. Comparison readers get a demo, a calculator or a case study. Track these as conversions so content gets credit for the revenue it starts.

Quick start: pick your five highest-intent keywords, brief one page per keyword this week, and add a matching call to action on each.
